Yoga and Equus Retreat :: The Three Sacred Relationships ~ Love, Work and Self

Learn the dynamics of the three core relationships that we all negotiate - that of the intimate other, that with work, and that with our self. These separate yet interwoven life threads capture the need to belong to another, to belong to community, and to belong to something larger and deeper within ourselves. Each is vital, and neglecting any one weakens the others. But it's not simply about "balancing" them,  it's about keeping them in an open and honest conversation with one another. When we allow these Sacred Relationships to learn from and revitalize one another, we risk becoming vulnerable but we also open to a life that is innocent, dangerous, and wonderful all at the same time. Explore the ways these core commitments are connected. Only by understanding the journey involved in each of the three relationships can we understand how to bring them together in one fulfilled life.

For the past five years, I’ve brought my retreat students to North Star Ranch to do life-changing work with my dear friend and highly respected colleague, Koelle Simpson. The retreats have included three life-changing methodologies: yoga, life coaching and horse work. In years past, these three methodologies were compartmentalized into their own separate section of my retreats. Over the years, I’ve come to learn that the lines between these categories are quite blurry. In fact, I now see yoga, horse work and life coaching as one big modality to help people heal their minds, bodies, hearts and souls.  This year, Koelle and I have decided to integrate these three modalities. We’ve designed a fully integrated retreat where participants will experience the magical splendor of yoga, life coaching and horse work throughout the day, creating an unprecedented transformational experience.

The Ranch has always been a place of marvel for me. It is a place where honest-to-God miracles happen. I’ve seen hearts heal time and time again. When I say I’ve seen it, I’m not speaking metaphorically. With my own eyes, I have seen the faces of people that I know, intimately and deeply, change in front of me. People who have held pain and guilt and shame for years literally drop each mask of suffering while they are doing this work. I have watched them shine brighter and more lovely as the hours pass. I have seen them shape-shift from burdened and gray to glowing and golden. I have seen them upright their spines and grow taller. I have seen the blue or green or brown of their eyes become a deeper and more translucent shade during the course of an afternoon. I’ve seen people frozen in their lives and in their bodies come to life like flowers that have finally found sunshine and water. Their beautiful Lazarus souls time and again rise from the tombs of their own making to find new and miraculous lives awaiting them.

The yoga classes will be a unique combination of restorative (gentle and kind) yoga with a powerful non-denominational inspirational message, real-time life coaching and emotional processing while we work through integrating the information into your body. We will practice yoga inside the sanctuary at Yoga Church, outdoors at North Star Ranch in the round pen (sans horses) and then among the horses and oak trees overlooking the valley.

In the Equus coaching sessions you will stand near a horse (in the round pen or arena). You’ll gesture to that horse. It will gesture back to you. And you’ll begin to feel an almost telepathic communication between you and this creature. In conversation with these intuitive animals, we find the power to be as kind, playful, and beautiful as they are. Similarly, the body has its own language and it is constantly offering meaningful guidance. As you drop deeper and deeper into your body, you will feel an almost telepathic communication between you and the animal of your body. This is why yoga is so similar to horse work. Understanding the language of our body is critical to our emotional, physical and spiritual healing.

This retreat is designed for people of any size, weight, age or medical history. No previous yoga or horse experience is required. I'm going to repeat this because it's important: this retreat is designed for EVERY HUMAN BODY. Yes, even yours.

About Koelle Simpson:

Life coach and horse whisperer, Koelle Simpson, offers a new perspective on communication and trust development. She is honored to have received extraordinary educational experiences and opportunities with individuals who are working to have a positive impact on the world. Her mission in life is to help others rebuild trust in themselves, as well as in their relationships with others, and as a result unleash the powerful leader within each of us. From 2000 to 2005, Koelle was a student of world-renowned equine trainer and best-selling author Monty Roberts, known as “The Horse Whisperer”. Koelle was given the opportunity to learn first-hand from Mr. Roberts, conducting speaking engagements, workshops and demonstrations and partaking in national and international touring events. During this time, Koelle helped troubled individuals and corporations to build trust and redefine their approach to communication using the non-verbal language of horses.

In 2005, Koelle was offered apprenticeship with internationally acclaimed life coach, best-selling self-help author, and Oprah columnist, Dr. Martha Beck. The time and training spent with Dr. Beck enabled Koelle to obtain a more thorough understanding of the parallels between helping a troubled horse and helping a troubled individual regain the directions to a great life. Recently, Koelle has developed new friendships at the Londolozi game reserve, a global leader in wildlife conservation, located near Kruger National Park in South Africa. She is thrilled to have this special opportunity to visit the bushveld on a regular basis to enhance her understanding of Mother Nature’s example of leadership, trust, balance and interspecies communication.

Travel and lodging information

This retreat provides an ideal setting for relaxed study, with time between sessions to digest and absorb learning. Located in Avila Beach near San Luis Obispo, a scenic town nestled in the coastal mountains of California’s Central Coast, this pristine environment is bike and hike friendly, with a delightful mix of cafes, shops, beaches, trails, and hot springs for non-class time.

True North Retreat Center (AKA Yoga Church) is 8 miles from San Luis Obispo Airport (SBP). We are about four hours north of Los Angeles (LAX) and four hours south of San Francisco (SFO). We recommend lodging at Avila Village Inn, a beautiful boutique hotel in the same village as our retreat center or at Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort, also within walking distance. If you want an ocean view room, we recommendDolphin Bay Resort (2.7 miles away) or Avila Lighthouse Suites (1.5 miles away). There is taxi service from and to the airport or you may want to rent a car and lengthen your stay to see nearby Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, Hearst Castle or Big Sur. During your visit, we recommend making time to enjoy the Bob Jones Trail, a beautiful bike path adjacent to True North Retreat Center that runs along the creek to Avila Beach (1.5 miles from beach to True North). There are a few food options within our village, Woodstone Marketplace and The Oasis Grill within Avila Bay Athletic Club. Whole Foods market is 6 miles away in San Luis Obispo.
